Why Does Your Skin Stop Looking Like You? And What We Did About It.

"I don't recognise my skin anymore."

It's one of the most common things we hear — from women and men over 35. And it's not vanity. It's a genuine, unsettling shift that happens gradually, until one day you look in the mirror and something has clearly changed.

The glow that once came naturally has faded. Fine lines have appeared — not dramatically, but persistently. Skin tone is less even. Pigmentation has crept in. Skin that was once firm and smooth feels rougher, thinner, less like itself. Foundation doesn't sit as smoothly. Your skin simply doesn't look as healthy or vibrant as it once did.

Understanding why this happens is the first step to doing something about it.

The biology of skin ageing

From our mid-twenties onwards, our skin begins to change in ways we can't see — until eventually we can.

Collagen production gradually declines each year. The collagen already present in the skin is continuously broken down by natural enzymes and environmental damage. The specialised cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin — fibroblasts — become less active with age.

As collagen levels fall, skin becomes thinner, weaker and less elastic. This is when we begin to notice fine lines and wrinkles, reduced firmness, loss of elasticity, rougher texture, dullness, uneven skin tone, pigmentation and slower skin repair.

But collagen loss isn't the only problem.

Free radicals — the hidden accelerant

Every day, our skin is exposed to factors that generate unstable molecules known as free radicals. Sun exposure, pollution, stress, smoking, poor diet, even normal cellular metabolism — all of them contribute.

Free radicals attack healthy skin cells, damaging proteins, lipids and DNA. One of their biggest targets is collagen. This process — oxidative stress — accelerates visible skin ageing and contributes to wrinkles, loss of firmness, pigmentation, dullness and reduced skin resilience.

Protecting the skin from oxidative stress has become one of the most important goals of modern skincare. And one ingredient, more than almost any other, has proven itself equal to that task.

Why Vitamin C has become one of the world's most studied skincare ingredients

Few skincare ingredients have been researched as extensively as Vitamin C — and the reasons are compelling.

It neutralises free radicals before they can attack healthy skin cells. It helps protect existing collagen from oxidative damage. It supports fibroblasts in producing new collagen. It improves skin brightness, promotes a more even complexion, and helps reduce the appearance of pigmentation and age spots.

It doesn't just address one aspect of skin ageing. It addresses several simultaneously. Which is why, when it works, the results are visible — and why so many people have tried it and been left wondering why it didn't work for them.

The problem with most Vitamin C serums

The most commonly used form of Vitamin C in skincare is L-Ascorbic Acid — extensively researched and widely regarded as the gold standard. But it has a significant limitation.

Once mixed into a water-based formulation, L-Ascorbic Acid begins to degrade immediately. It oxidises, loses potency, changes colour and becomes progressively less effective. By the time a product has been formulated, bottled, shipped, stored and opened repeatedly on your bathroom shelf, a meaningful portion of its potency may already be gone.

You're applying the idea of Vitamin C. Not the full reality of it.

We believed there had to be a better way.

Bridging the gap between clean and clinical skincare

At Intrinsic, our goal wasn't simply to create another Vitamin C serum.

We wanted to create a Vitamin C system that delivers the performance expected from clinical skincare whilst remaining true to our clean formulation philosophy.

For many years, consumers have felt they had to choose. Clean products that felt good but didn't deliver meaningful results. Or clinical products that worked but came loaded with ingredients they'd rather not put on their skin.

We didn't believe that compromise was necessary.

Instead, we began by selecting high-performance active ingredients that not only have strong scientific evidence behind them, but also meet our own stringent clean formulation standards. Around those actives, we built sophisticated delivery systems using carefully selected, naturally derived ingredients — chosen to maximise stability, optimise skin penetration and create an elegant sensory experience.

Every ingredient has a purpose. Each one was selected because it contributes to the performance of the formulation, enhances the delivery of the active ingredient, supports skin compatibility or improves the overall experience. Nothing is there by accident. No fillers. No irritants. No compromise.

The result is what we call Clean Clinical Skincare — the best of both worlds, without asking you to settle for less of either.

Why we chose THD

Rather than relying solely on traditional Vitamin C, we chose Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate — THD — as the foundation of our daily serum.

THD is a highly stable, oil-soluble form of Vitamin C that doesn't oxidise or degrade. Once absorbed, it converts to active Vitamin C within the skin, where it supports collagen production and provides antioxidant protection. It's suitable for most skin types including sensitive skin, and it works consistently — every morning, without exception.

But we didn't stop at the active ingredient.

Our Advanced THD Vitamin C Serum was formulated around a sophisticated delivery system using lightweight, naturally derived emollients chosen specifically for their ability to drive the active deep into the skin's lipid-rich layers quickly and efficiently. Despite being an oil serum, it absorbs rapidly and leaves a dry-touch finish — elegant, non-greasy and a pleasure to use.

This wasn't a happy accident. It was a deliberate formulation decision, built around the science of how oil-soluble actives penetrate skin most effectively.

Why we created the Vitamin C Activation System

THD solves the stability problem. But L-Ascorbic Acid remains the most clinically validated form of Vitamin C in existence — and we didn't want to abandon it. We wanted to use it properly.

Our Vitamin C Activation System solves the stability problem at source by removing it entirely. The L-Ascorbic Acid is kept as 100% pure powder — dry, sealed, stable — until the moment of use. Mixed fresh with the Activation Booster immediately before application, it reaches your skin at maximum potency, every single time. No degradation. No oxidation. No wondering how much of the formula has already broken down.

The double whammy

Used together, these two approaches deliver something no single Vitamin C product can.

Daily antioxidant protection and collagen support from stable THD — every morning, without fail. Combined with the full clinical power of freshly activated L-Ascorbic Acid two to three mornings a week.

Two forms of Vitamin C. Two mechanisms. Complementary, not competing. Comprehensive protection against the oxidative damage and collagen decline that drive visible skin ageing.

This is the double whammy. And it's something no other system on the market is offering.

Putting it to the test

Developing great products is one thing. Proving they work is another.

We conducted an independent eight-week trial with real participants — women and men — across a range of ages and skin concerns. For the first six weeks, participants used the Advanced THD Vitamin C Serum alone. In the final two weeks, they introduced the Vitamin C Activation System.

After eight weeks:

  • 75% reported smoother skin texture
  • 44% reported brighter skin, a more even complexion and softer fine lines
  • 38% reported improved skin hydration
  • 25% saw improvements in the appearance of pigmentation and sunspots
  • 88% said they would purchase the product

And when the Activation System was introduced in the final two weeks, 50% of participants reported that their improvements accelerated.

"Brighter and smoother — my skin tone is so much more even and calmer. The redness I'd had for years just settled down." — Wendy, trial participant

"Skin feels smoother and my lines feel less pronounced. Skin tone feels better." — Jude, trial participant

Real people. Real results. No retouching.

Clean and clinical. No compromise.

At Intrinsic, we believe effective skincare shouldn't require a trade-off.

Our Advanced Vitamin C System combines clinically recognised, high-performance actives with clean formulation principles and sophisticated delivery technology — designed to support healthier, brighter, smoother and more resilient skin, for women and men who want visible results without unnecessary compromise.

Because great skincare isn't about choosing between clean and clinical.

It's about bringing the very best of both together.
